The Painless Artist

Wayne Howard-Saunders (British, 1978) a.k.a “The Painless Artist” creates striking, thought-provoking art through multiple mediums to enhance his message and his work, from digital media, painting, and drawing.

The Painless Artist creates honest and personal work which delves into the subconscious mind, and uses this to show the viewer his perception of the world, through living with experiences of trauma, disabilities such as spinal injuries, chronic pain, anxiety and depression. Wayne finds art to be a complementary therapy to help him with his rare injuries and conditions he lives with.

Education and Work

Wayne was taught Art & Design in London, and was also educated at Hertfordshire University in Product Design, and achieved a Master's Degree in Digital Design.

He also earned an FdSc in forensic science at Queen Mary’s University in London. He worked in the retail sector, freelance design, media & communications and the civil service.

Fun Fact

Wayne is related to the English painter Edgar Bundy (1862-1922) who specialised in historical paintings and his work is held in The Tate Museum.

Method and Progression

Wayne finds an idea or thought, paints a scene and under quick-fire decisions, places objects in his work, which unlocks some interesting findings and also makes sense. Wayne struggles daily with his disabilities, but despite these conditions, he tries to keep adapting to and evolving. In turn, adapting and moving forward helps keep him creative, entertained, fulfilled and a distracted.

Naturally, since Wayne's art is constantly progressing to new levels, it felt right to create his first online exhibition titled 'A Journey of Emotion', which aims to spread awareness of Cauda Equina Syndrome (CES) and it's impact, in collaboration with the Cauda Equina Champions Charity who aims to empower those with CES, and help them them move forward. Aims

Wayne Howard-Saunders, known as The Painless Artist, has embarked on a lifelong journey of managing his conditions and disabilities. Over time, he discovered that art could play a vital role in helping him manage his pain.

This personal method of pain management, alongside his desire to support others in similar situations, inspired Wayne to adopt the name The Painless Artist.
